Opencell and Vodafone launch the UK’s first centralised 4G indoor mobile signal solution


We’re very proud to announce that the UK’s first 4G indoor mobile signal solution powered by small cell technology and a centralised service node is live in London today.

With the growing use of solar-reflective glass, insulation and other environmentally friendly building materials, it’s increasingly challenging to access mobile signal in high rise buildings. However, anyone visiting the five floors of AECOM’s New European HQ at Aldgate Tower can now connect to Vodafone 4G coverage via Opencell.

As this pilot site goes live, it demonstrates another indoor mobile signal “impossibility” made possible by Opencell. The days of people accepting mobile signal dead zones in their buildings are over, and this faster, completely secure connectivity will help many leapfrog from no access to mobile signal, straight to the best voice and data experience available.”

This Opencell solution is enabled by our unique shared transmission service, powered through our in-house data centre and the 4G small cell technology currently available via SpiderCloud Wireless. Tim Garfoot, SpiderCloud Wireless Vice-President of Sales in Europe comments:

As the UK’s first offsite, or “centralised”, 4G indoor mobile signal solution, we also continue to enable connectivity through 3G hardware (thanks to partners like NEC) where there isn’t yet a 4G alternative.

Nick Brown, our COO, explains, “The route to a single cell mobile connectivity solution is being developed, but it’s still a while off with so many mobile devices still reliant on a 3G frequency. We’re proud to utilise the best technology out there to bring our customers the voice connectivity they need now.”

Partner to all four UK mobile network operators, we foresee a fully 4G, multi-operator solution being available this year.

Nick adds, “We have seen that the future of indoor mobile connectivity is being enabled most effectively by smalls cells –  both as the most cost-effective solution, and the quickest to install and upgrade. Equally, we believe that in the world of radio frequencies and spectrum, innovation must not be dictated by hardware.”
